In today’s post we are excited to share photos from our recent field trip to the beautiful island of Koh Phangan, Thailand.

Our visit highlighted the landscape of coastal areas with sandy stretches where mangrove trees are thriving.

Since its foundation, Orphek has been dedicated to developing customized light spectrums for public aquariums for various ecosystems, including mangroves, seagrass beds, and kelp displays.

And during our time at Hin Kong Beach (island’s western shoreline) we had the opportunity to explore the extensive mangrove shrubs in their natural habitat.

This exploration not only enriched our understanding of these crucial ecosystems, but also reinforced both our passion and mission to create effective lighting solutions that cater to their unique needs.

In the upcoming sections, we will explore our groundbreaking technologies, highlight some of our successful projects, and provide the latest insights on mangrove ecosystems.

So, we invite you to join us on this journey as we showcase how Orphek’s innovations are making a positive impact on the conservation of these vital habitats. Enjoy the read!

The Mangroves of Thailand

Over half (62%) of Thailand’s mangrove forests have been lost due to development. While urban expansion and road construction have played significant roles, aquaculture (particularly shrimp farming) has been especially detrimental to these vital ecosystems.

Despite these challenges, local communities have taken action to revitalize the dwindling mangrove populations.

In the past decade, there have been approximately five mangrove planting initiatives, with most activities occurring on Mother’s or Father’s Day.

Each initiative typically involves between 40 to 60 volunteers who collectively plant around 2,000 seeds.

Unfortunately, the survival rate of these seedlings after the first year is only 15-20%, which is insufficient for establishing a sustainable population capable of reproduction.

A quick dive into a few Orphek projects

We are showcasing 3 projects involving mangroves for public aquariums just for a quick look.

Orphek has developed customized spectrums for these venues in accordance with the client’s requirements and spectrum specifications for the displays.
