The Forever Reef Project — Preserving Coral Biodiversity
One of the most meaningful milestones of 2025 was the official announcement of Orphek’s partnership with The Forever Reef Project, a groundbreaking global conservation initiative led by Great Barrier Reef Legacy.
Based in Port Douglas, North Queensland, the Forever Reef Project has created the world’s first living coral biobank—often described as a modern-day coral ark.
This pioneering facility preserves live coral fragments and genetic samples under carefully controlled conditions, safeguarded by advanced Orphek LED lighting systems.
Today, the biobank protects more than one-third of all coral species found on the Great Barrier Reef, making it the first publicly accessible living coral biobank in the world.
Its mission is clear: to preserve coral biodiversity for future reef restoration, research, and education.

In 2025, respected third-party reviewers subjected Orphek’s LED lighting solutions — particularly the Natura iCon 150W — to rigorous, independent performance testing, with outstanding results that highlighted both efficiency and real-world reefing performance.
A comprehensive review conducted by Reefs.com’s DaniReef LAB demonstrated that the Natura iCon delivers exceptionally high photosynthetic output relative to its power consumption. Operating at just 150 watts, the fixture produced PAR readings exceeding 2,000 µmol m⁻² s⁻¹ at close distances, achieving an impressive PAR-per-watt efficiency of over 13.5 µmol m⁻² s⁻¹ W⁻¹. The test also confirmed strong light uniformity and effective coverage, making it suitable for demanding reef systems requiring both intensity and consistency.
In a separate independent PAR comparison, the Natura iCon outperformed a higher-wattage Radion fixture, reinforcing that superior light performance is driven by optical design and spectrum engineering — not wattage alone. This result further positioned Orphek’s technology as a benchmark for efficiency and usable output in modern reef lighting.
Additional third-party evaluations, including video reviews by Reef Builders, praised the Natura iCon’s spectral balance and intensity, describing its output as exceptionally strong for coral growth, coloration, and fluorescence. Together, these independent tests validate Orphek’s commitment to delivering lighting solutions that combine power, efficiency, and purpose-built reef spectra.

Another highlight of Orphek’s global presence in public aquarium lighting took place in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, where our team visited the renowned Palma Aquarium.
