Understanding Coral Fluorescence and Spectral Quality
Coral fluorescence is a fascinating process where corals absorb light and re-emit it at a lower energy level. The absorbed light is known as ‘excitation,’ while the re-emitted light is referred to as ’emission.’ This phenomenon is crucial for understanding how corals interact with light, offering valuable insights into the health and environmental conditions of coral reefs.
Channel 1 Lighting Configuration (Sunrise and Sunset Mode): 2 x 590 nm, 2 x 670/740 nm, 9 x 18,000 K LEDs
The fluorescence of coral proteins, when excited by an amber 590nm LED, tends to emit light primarily in the orange and red portions of the spectrum. Here are some examples by species, listed with their excitation and emission wavelengths (in nm):
Acropora digitifera: 570/590 – Montipora monasteriata: 570/610 – Pocillopora damicornis: 570/625
Porites murrayensis: 570/625 – Discosoma: 573/593 – Anemonia sculata: 574/595
Acropora horrida: 574/625 – Acropora aspera: 575/625 – Favia favus: 583/593
Regarding photosynthesis, Pigment 700 (P700) in Photosystem I is crucial because it can absorb light at a wavelength of 740nm. Photosystem II acts as the electron donor in this process.
Additionally, there is an 18,000K LED used, providing a crisp, full-spectrum white light, which is beneficial for various applications involving light quality and intensity.
Channel 2 Lighting Configuration (Noon Mode): 7 x 480/470 nm LEDs, 6 x 18,000 K LEDs
When coral proteins are excited by a 470/480nm LED, they usually emit light in the green regions of the spectrum. Below is a list of coral species along with their respective excitation and emission wavelengths (in nm):
Anemonia majano: 458/486 – Acropora tenuis: 465/485 – Acropora tenuis (green band): 470/480
Acropora sp.: 472/495 – Discosoma sp.: 475/500 – Anemonia aspera: 480/490
Anemonia sculata: 480/499 – Acropora aspera: 480/500 – Acropora aspera (green band): 484/499
Channel 3 Lighting Configuration (Cyan and Blue Mode): 13 x 470/480 nm LEDs
The 470nm and 480nm LED is considered the universal bandwidth for showcasing coral fluorescence
