About Jason’s reef tank & lighting project
The tank is an Innovative Marine Peninsula 200 gallon mixed corals reef tank with 30 inches depth (dominate SPS corals).
Jason’s project aimed at swapping out a pair of Radion lights (XR 15) positioned at both ends of his tank with Orphek OR3 LED Bars – one unit of OR3 150 Blue Plus LED bar and one unit of OR3 150 UV/Violet LED bar, seamlessly controlled and dimmed by Orphek Osix controller and programmed through the Orphek App.
Simultaneously, he intended to retain the Radion XR30 he already had, running horizontally across the tank, and complement it with the Orphek OR3 LED Bars to enhance pop-up colors and ensure comprehensive coverage.
Mounting solutions – Primary lights – the Radions are already mounted with brackets (brand not mentioned in the video)/ supplementary Orphek lights were expertly assembled and suspended with Orphek Universal Fixing Brackets Kit.
Unboxing Orphek products – Jason’s feedbacks
As Jason begins unboxing his recently acquired OR3 150 LED Bars, he highlights a remarkable feature – these lights are entirely passively cooled, which means they operate without fans. If you’re seeking a lighting solution that maintains a peaceful and quiet environment, these lights are the ideal choice.
Furthermore, Jason is quick to point out the exceptional build quality of the OR3 150 LED Bars, describing them as “unbelievable.” He emphasizes the use of high-quality aluminum and thick, durable acrylic, noting that the industrial connectors are of top-notch quality. In his own words “is just unbelievable, the high quality aluminum as the mixed acrylic – super super thick… all the industrial connectors is just topnotch… the power supply, they don’t cheap on that either…you got a Meanwell power supply which in the industry is extremely well known.”
As the video unfolds, Jason revisits his discussion of the OR3 LED Bars‘ exceptional quality, emphasizing their robust construction. He expresses his confidence in their durability to the extent that he jests about the possibility of submerging the bars underwater, speculating that they may even have an IP67 waterproof certification, although he is not entirely certain about this detail.
In his opinion “these lights are built to last”. (Indeed they are; scroll down to learn more!)
So, here we will step in and clarify about the OR3 LED Bars quality and waterproof rating.
They are slim, they are resistant, versatile and beautiful to display!
Indeed, Orphek OR3 LED Bars are IP67 certified LED bars with high quality materials, really resilient to the most extreme environments, with a thick 8mm acrylic top cover.
You are also getting newer high efficiency 5w Dual-Chip power LEDs running at 50% of the power, for highest PAR longevity with really minimum loss over the years.
And more – An exceptional thermal management improvement – an Orphek customized power supply, designed to provide the best electricity transfer and stability.
Although Orphek offers the largest variety of IP67 waterproof certified products, NONE of our products were designed to be submerged and used underwater.
All OR3 LED Bars and its connectors, extension cables and plugs are waterproof. OR3 LED Bars were designed and developed to be installed over aquariums.
FYI: What is IP67?
An IP67 rating signifies a product’s “waterproof” capability.
The number 6 signifies “complete protection against dust over an extended period,” as well as “protection against contact with objects greater than 1mm in diameter, such as a wire or a small tool.”
The number 7 indicates that the system is “protected against short periods of immersion in water while under pressure between 15cm and 1m.”
Jason unboxes the Orphek Osix controller
As the unboxing of Orphek products continues, Jason proceeds to unveil the Orphek Osix controller. He elaborates on its functionality, pointing out that it can efficiently manage up to six units of OR3 LED Bars.
Notably, he emphasizes that users have the flexibility to set up either six different colors or maintain uniform lighting across all bars. A noteworthy feature he highlights is the convenience of controlling all these units using just one outlet through the Meanwell power supply.
We would like to make a quick stop here to give additional explanation about the Orphek Osix.
Orphek Osix is not just a controller, it is series of smart devices!
Orphek R&D team developed and engineered a sophisticated technology, converting what could be one more dimming controller in the market into a groundbreaking device that will integrate LED lighting solutions is a way never seen before.
What you can do with Osix:
- You will upgrade your OR3 LED Bars, so they will operate with iCon technology (intelligent connectivity).
- You will be able to connect your OR3 LED Bars to Orphek awesome App. which is compatible with both Android and iPhone.
In fact you will be upgrading to iCon technology and program, control, monitor and dim your OR3 Reef Aquarium LED Bars (and integrate them with all Orphek iCon LED solutions if you have them).
Why it is a series of smart devices?
Because Orphek offers different models for different OR3 LED Bar sizes, not only for the OR3 150 LED Bars that Jason has.
Models available & OR3 LED Bars compatibilities
Osix 60 – OR3 60 LED Bars only/ Osix 90 – OR3 90 LED Bars only/ Osix 120 – OR3 120 LED Bars only/ Osix 150 – OR3 150 LED Bars only.
Jason unboxes the Orphek Universal Fixing Brackets
As we already mentioned under the title lighting project, Jason has 2 different mounting solutions – For the primary lights – the Radions – they are already mounted with brackets (brand not mentioned in the video); and for his supplementary Orphek lights he expertly assembled and suspended with Orphek Universal Fixing Brackets Kit.
We were very happy to watch him fixing his OR3 150 LED Bars with our brackets while giving the following feedback: “as far as the brackets go there’s pretty no easier bracket to assemble.”
he also adds that you will receive tons of different parts so you are able to use the brackets to fix Orphek lights from the ceiling, from the back of the tank stand.
We would like to add just a few more details for you:
Orphek Universal Fixing Brackets Kit is made of high quality Aluminium alloy, therefore it will never rust even in contact with salted water or in extreme salted humidity environments! It is important to know that the black color of Orphek Universal Fixing Brackets Kit is not in fact color. We are using electric anodized Aluminium alloy.
What does it mean?
Anodizing is an electrolytic process for producing thick oxide coatings, usually on Aluminium and its alloys. The oxide layer is typically 5 to 30µm in thickness and is used to give improved surface resistance to wear and corrosion, or as a decorative layer. This process artificially changes the structure of aluminum oxide on the surface of the metal, therefore it provides a surface finish that is more durable, stain-resistant, and corrosion-resistant.
But back to the video, Jason explains that he used the fixing brackets to make the following layout:
The OR3 UV/Violet LED Bar will be placed in the back of the tank, while the OR3 Blue Plus LED bar will be in the front. he also measure the space needed for the current lights that he is running over his tank (the Radions)
The lights are ready to be tested!
Once the OR3 LED bars were mounted over the tank Jason powered them on.
He was notably impressed that the lights were extremely powerful, and as far as the looks of it goes, he loved the distinct spectrums emitted by each of the individual LEDs.
When it came to the Orphek App, he found it to be intuitively designed. According to Jason, if you’re capable of connecting a basic smart bulb in your home, you’ll have no trouble navigating the app. All you need to do is initiate a device search, select the found device, give it a custom name, and then fine-tune the channels as per your specific requirements
PAR measures
As the video progresses, Jason demonstrates how to program the OR3 LED Bars by incorporating our informative instructional video. Regardless, we opted to skip this section (which you can watch in the video) and proceed directly to the PAR measurements.
To conduct the PAR measurement of the OR3 LED Bars, Jason utilizes an Apogee Underwater Quantum Flux meter, and he ensures that the Radion lights are switched off for the measurement.
OBs.: PAR stands for Photosynthetically Available Radiation, which is light that falls into the 400-700nm spectral range. The unit for measuring PAR is micromoles per second, abbreviated as μmol/s. This unit indicates how many photons in the PAR spectral range fall onto the coral each second. PAR is measured in PPFD (Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density). PPFD measures both intensity of light and the amount of light that actually reaches the coral.
In a nutshell: PAR is light usable by corals for photosynthesis and is measured in PPFD.
Between the center of the tank and the OR3 LED Bars, Jason recorded a PAR reading of 220 to 230.
On the right side, he achieved a PAR reading of 300, which brought him great satisfaction. Additionally, he couldn’t help but express his admiration for the vivid color enhancement (coral color pop) provided by the lights.
We are making a pause here just to better explain about controlling the channels:
Each bar connected to the orphek Osix will function as a channel, therefore you can build your own light fixture adding up to 6 OR3 LED Bars (to have 06 channels).
But most importantly, you are getting the iCon most advanced dimming technology!
- Osix ables you to get the best spectrum created by Orphek during the day with 1 – 100% dimming range.
- Osix ables you to combine it with Orphek’s moonlight spectrum during the night with 10,000% (0.01 to 1%) dimming range.
BEST SPECTRUM BY DAY + REAL NATURAL MOONLIGHT BY NIGHT
By connecting your OR3 LED BARS TO ORPHEK OSIX you are upgrading to the Orphek groundbreaking 10,000% dimming and 24h programming technology for coral health, growth, color, spawning and biological clock correction!
As Jason elaborates on the app’s features, he highlights the built-in programs that come as part of the package, thanks to the innovative iCon technology (you are getting the same technology that comes with the awesome Atlantik iCon series!):
- Moon cycle, clouds, acclimation, jelly fish modes in addition to your own programming – New additional awesome features for your corals and jellyfish!
- Pre-installed program for optimal coral pop color & growth. Orphek brings you one program offering a decade of research combined to one single most advanced program for color pop & coral growth. Of course we believe in custom made products and preferences, so you can also create your very own programs.
Conclusion
Jason concludes the video by expressing his contentment with his Radion lights, emphasizing that he has never encountered any problems with them. His primary goal was to introduce more vibrant color saturation to his setup (coral color pop), and the OR3 LED Bars have successfully achieved this objective.
He also made it clear that the video was unedited and that his intention was never to engage in a brand comparison or to declare which brands are superior.
We hope you enjoyed as much as we did!
