“For most of history, man has had to fight nature to survive; in this century he is beginning to realize that, in order to survive, he must protect it.” – Jacques-Yves Cousteau
Coral reefs are among the most extraordinary natural wonders of the world’s oceans.
Owning a marine aquarium is not only a relaxing and rewarding hobby but also an educational journey—learning about life cycles, environmental responsibility, and contributing to the preservation of marine species.
However, the beauty of corals is matched by their fragility, and maintaining a thriving reef requires a significant financial investment and a true dedication to caring for the living organisms you bring into your home. Experience comes with time, patience, and continuous learning. Ensuring the health of your aquarium’s inhabitants is an ongoing process that demands careful attention and commitment.
Lighting is just one of many essential pieces of equipment needed to maintain a successful aquarium. Alongside skimmers, filters, pumps, and more, Orphek specializes in providing optimal lighting solutions but does not design, install, or maintain your entire setup. Your responsibility as an aquarist includes monitoring and regulating various environmental parameters, which are critical for the health, growth, and coloration of your corals.
To maintain ideal conditions, consider regularly checking and controlling factors such as:
- The placement of your tank and lighting
- Coral placement and compatibility
- Quality and suitability of your equipment
- Health and selection of corals and fish prior to purchase
- Proper quarantine procedures for new additions
- Water quality, including filters, skimmers, and chemical balance
- Water temperature, salinity, and circulation
- Testing key parameters: Nitrite, Nitrate, Alkalinity, pH, Ammonia, Calcium, Phosphate
- Correct mixing and addition of saltwater
- Proper feeding for fish and corals
Reef keeping demands planning, patience, time, and constant care. We strongly encourage you to educate yourself about coral and marine life requirements before purchasing. Planning ahead and understanding the standards for your chosen species greatly increases your chances of success.
