This new coral facility in Detroit will be opening soon. At this time Steve is just starting to stock coral. This entire system is lit by 48 Orphek V4 Reef LED lights. The system uses the group function of our app so Steve can control intensity or time on each individual tank or control all eight tanks at once. Each tank uses six Orphek V4 lights. So I have had more time to spend with the new orphek aquarium lens and I have to say the quality of my pictures have increased notably in my opinion.

Not trying to toot my own horn or anything because let me tell you, ALL the credit to my new photography skillz must go to this lens!

All the lenses are made of high quality glass, no plastic lens here! This leads to clearer pictures and a longer lasting lens because less prone to scratching!

Also there are multiple different lenses that you can mix and match with and the macro lens is very accommodating, you donโt have to be SUPER close to the corals to use it like most other macro lenses I have used.

#tbt Back in 2018 we did a project in the Cairns Aquarium in Queensland Australia.
Forty aquarium exhibit tanks were designed and developed by AAT (Advanced Aquarium Technologies) and lighted by Orphek LED Lighting solutions (YES! All of them!). Cairns Aquarium is the only aquarium in the world that focuses solely on the habitats, ecosystems and species of Tropical North Queensland.
Orphek was chosen by the sole provider of LED Lighting solutions for this project because we are today the only company providing LED lighting solutions capable to mimic Nature by providing spectrums that are present in a natural environment.
It is also the home to the largest freshwater tank in Australia (containing 400,000 liters of water), a deep sea tank (10m x 8.5m), which is the first of its kind in Australia and only one of three in the world, and the worldโs first true tidal motion tank.
Tanks were lighted by our AMAZONAS 500 WATT and our P300 (Orphek no longer sells the P300 solution. They were replaced by a newer solution called AMAZONAS 320 WATT).

The tank is a 60x60x60 cube, Berlinese system, the replenishment of the โtriadeโ was made with doser pump, there is a fluid bed filter for carbon and, when needed, but only when needed, various type of resins, there is also a Tunze skimmer, a couple of movement pumps and a return pump, all is from Tunze.

THE PROJECT

Advanced Aquarium Technologies has been responsible for the aquarium specialist construction works plus supplying specialty range of commercial life support systems installed on-site and smaller exhibits fitted with skid-mounted life support system units all designed and produced by AAT. The company has been contracted to support the operations management of the aquarium providing training and on-site support for the first 12 months of operation.

The Oceanarium is one of the largest in China displaying the worldโs largest acrylic panel with 40m Long and 8.3m. High. It overpasses the Singapore S.E.A Oceanarium, a world-record holder of a 36m indoor aquarium.

Thanks to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum and his ambition to transform the emirate into a capital to pair with Singapore and Hong Kong, Dubai is today considered a rose blooming in a desert.

Breaking world records Dubai excel in modern architecture and design. The tallest building of the world โ Burj Khalifa bin Zahid is located in downtown Dubai and the only 7 stars hotel of the world โ Burj Al Arab โ is also located in the Capital on an artificial island in front of Jumeiraj beach.

Burj Al Arab was design by British architect Tom Wright in 1993. Its construction was finished six years later and since then it became an iconic and symbolic statement for Dubai, just as the Statue of Liberty is for the US or the EiffelTower is for Paris. Its distinctive and exquisite shape is a symbol of modernity and an invitation to high quality standards of services and facilities. Dubaiโs crown prince was impressed by the Tomโs sketch of Burj Al arab mega structure and the concept was to construct a yacht-inspired building and give the impression that it was rising from the sea.

THE FACILITIES

Although being an emirate located in the Persian Gulf, Dubai lies directly within the Arabian Desert and much of Dubaiโs landscape are sandy and gravel deserts, therefore its hot desert climate had a huge impact of the concept of the hotel structures and facilities. Not only the hotel guest have unlimited access to the water park located at walk range, indoor pools and private beach but also inside the hotel was decorated with water fountains, geysers and huge aquariums that were built to offer a refreshing experience in this โparadisiacal oasis.โ

The central fountain is located in the main atrium of the hotel where every half hour a 100ft geyser shoots up. Located one floor below Al Mahaja or โThe Oyster Shellโ is a restaurant that offers not just dinning, but also the experience of a simulated submarine voyage. While tasting the best seafood Dubai has to offer, guests also have the opportunity to enjoy a stunning 300,000 liters salt-water floor to ceiling marine aquarium.

Last year we had the opportunity to see the most beautiful and most unique experience of Takashi Amanoโs 40m planted aquarium aquascape* in Oceanรกrio de Lisboa (Lisbon Oceanarium).

*Aquascaping is the art of recreate an underwater landscape with the inspiration of both underwater locations, but also natural scenes, such as mountains, jungles, deserts, waterfalls and many others.
–
This fantastic massive Nature Aquarium measures 40m in length, 2.5m in depth, 1.5m in water depth and contains 160 tons of water, which contains 8,550L of Amazonia Soil, 20t of volcanic stones, 78 giant driftwood, 46 species of plants, and 10,000 tropical fish of 40 species. (As at April 22, 2015).

It was designed with a U shape layout so when you walk alongside of the tank you would feel as if you were in the forest underwater (Florestas Submersas).

In 2017 we have been also mesmerized with Takashi Amanoโs living art aquariums at The Sumida Aquarium in Tokyo, but this huge forest under water simply brought tears to our eyes. It was for us the most real and most fulfilling way to get inspired and to renew our desire to continue to develop the best environmentally friendly solutions to recreate Nature as closely as possible.

โThe color rendition is beyond my expectations! They look awesome and the corals are already showing good polyp extension. I have been in the hobby for almost 25 years now so I have tried pretty much every lighting option out there over the years. Here are some quick picks I took with the lenses you sent me. Itโs a 120 gallon reef, primarily SPS. I am running two V4gen2 and two OR90s 36โ bars. For filtration just using a protein skimmer with a sump full of mangroves. Dosing magnesium, calcium and sodium carbonate. Iโm also using two mp40s for flow and thatโs about it. I like to keep it simpleโ.

โFor many years I heard about the miraculous light of Orphek. To get this light in Russia was very difficult until recently. I had more than one project of marine aquariums in my life. I am amazed at what results can be achieved with this light. The aquarium is just running, but any kind of coral and fish with which I fill the reef feel very good. For a long time I was afraid to plant a rainbow anemone into a young system, but in this light it feels better than in a stable system, which is already 4 years old. I want to say thanks to the Orphek team they did a miracle. My reef is getting better and better every day.โ

Here client wanted our OR120 BAR LED light to reduce shadows and increase the PAR. We liked these photos so much because they are a good example to show how versatile these lights are. They can be combined to provide the mix you wish for (like the old T5s) with other Orphek LED solutions or even other brands. Not to mention that the entire layout looks cool and very well mounted. And YES the OR give you more POP and more cover! ๐ฅ
Europeโs largest tank in a Public Aquarium. (4th of the world!)

French Public Aquarium Nausicaa at Boulogne-sur-Mer in France ๐ซ๐ท was Built in the shape of a Manta Ray, the new building houses one of the largest aquariums in the World, holding a staggering 10,000 m3 of water (to give an idea of the scale, the equivalent of 4 Olympic pools).

Modelled on the island of Malpelo, off the coast of Colombia, this giant aquarium will recreate the ecosystem of the high seas.
–
Sharks, manta rays and shoals of other fish will populate this ecosystem, with almost 60,000 creatures in the community and the new tank will be the home of approximatly 22,000/25,000 different marine species, including hammerhead sharks and eagle rays.

Not only that! It is be the home of thirty eight new Orphek Amazonas 500 super LED Lights.

The tank with 60 m long, 30 m wide and 8 m deep (with a 20-metre long viewing window) will allow visitors to take in the dramatic scenes going on underwater.

An 18 metre-long transparent tunnel offers a totally immersive experience with panoramic viewing angles.

A vast viewing panel, measuring 20 metres long and 5 metres high, will also give spectacular views for the visitor.

Bluewater Reef – โAs many of you will know I replaced my aging Vertex illumina last Autumn and it’s been delivering great results so farโ.

โI’ve been keeping a watchful eye on the use of led bars which were increasingly being used to supplement led systems as well as T5 systems. Orpheks and Reef Brites were both on my list and with the value for money offered by the Orpheks I decided to add one to my 7 year old sps dominated reef. I opted for the OR2 Blue Plus 90 to supplement my Futura Sโ.

โThe bar is mounted in front of the Giesemann unit about 5 inches above the surface angled at 45 degrees pointing towards the front of my reefโ.

โThe effect is stunning, good spread along the 4 foot tank and excellent colour mixing, the extra pop from my corals is just what I wanted. Its to early to comment on the impact on coral growth but to be fair that’s in hand from the Futura and wasnt the reason for adding the Orphekโ.

โOrpheks customer service has been great, Tony taking time to answer my endless questions. I can certainly recommend the bars if you’re thinking of supllementing your existing lighting set up. They not only perform well but are well made and offer great value for moneyโ.

One of the things that we love about Orphek is the possibility of being able to meet interesting people and their projects. Some of them are really awesome!

Jennifer Schmidt, the director of Science & Research at the Shark Institute has recently contacted Orphek regarding her interest in making an intense light for their research vessel.
–
We offered her our Kaspian with a sealed the upper portion of the light body to prevent any moisture from creeping in. The Kaspian was equipped not only with special degree lens but also fitted with a costume built spectrum LED Matrix chip.
–
The idea of the Shark Institute was to attract plankton to the surface so the Whale sharks could feed on.
–
Since their research is carried out in the evening, the big challenge was the need for a strong light to bring the plankton to the surface in order to photograph Whale sharks. this is where Orphek jumped in to provide our expertise in customized spectrums.

“I started my 55″ x 39″ x 31” tank upgrade with 2 x Orphek V2.1b in January 2015, the corals thrived and a 3rd unit was added in June 2015 to stop shadows, such was the growth.

in March 2018 disaster struck, during the big freeze in the UK, a cold water pipe froze then burst, we were on holiday the house was flooded and without power, 3 salt buckets or corals were removed and the tank broken down for property repairs, which lasted 6 months.
–
January 2019 saw a restart, all there Atlantik’s have been upgraded to V4.2 specification, this time I will be concentrating on higher end coral as I have every confidence in these fantastic lights”.

High Tech Jellies get High Tech Orphek LEDs
The team at Orphek LED lighting had the chance to work with My Reef Creations to provide lighting for a robotic jellyfish exhibit for Festo Robotics.

This project was designed to display their advanced technology and prowess in design of robotic methods. The MRC team obviously wanted an equally well designed lighting plan for the system that would mimic the natural environment and light the display beautifully without consuming too much energy or being overly complicated.
–
The cylinder system is 65 inches high with a diameter of 53 inches. Comprising of 600 gallons, itโs lit with 2 units of the Orphek Atlantik Pendant WiFi. MRC fabricated the sleek looking mounting system and modeled it after their take on a robotic jellyfish. The tank rests on a CNC stainless steel stand and can be transported and setup quickly, allowing the clients to easily move the system from event to event.

Co-Owners of MRC, Tim and Raj designed the mount to match the lights, allowing for air flow and full light penetration by using a CNC to mill the housing to match the Atlantik Pendants faceplate exactly. Itโs the kind of detail that MRC is known for and what sets them apart from the rest.

Utilizing the built in WiFi capabilities of the Atlantik, the lighting is able to be changed to give a different look to the display throughout the show by ramping channels up or down based upon the clients choice. From a brightly lit full sunlight reef look to a blue that just brings out the highlights on the Jellyfish, the Atlantik Pendants are able to put the finishing touch on what can only be described as one of the coolest things weโve seen in a long time.

The system debuted recently at the AACC conference in Atlanta, Georgia and was the hit of the tradeshow floor with people literally mobbing the display to catch a glimpse and wonder at the high tech inner workings of the Jellies.
